Slade van Staden is an exceptional prospect from Durban playing for the Dolphins in South Africa domestic cricket.
A prospect of Umhlali Prep, and Hilton College, van Staden has been a star performer throughout the age groups culminating with both provincial (KwaZulu-Natal, Dolphins), and national (SA Schools) honours.
Such was his talent, the wicket-keeper batter made his first-class debut at 16 for KZN, then Franchise debut for the Dolphins at 18. An explosive batter in the top order, van Staden has already racked up nearly 50 hundreds, including a highest score of 220, in school, club and provincial cricket.
The 2023 calendar year has been an exceptional one for van Staden too. After finishing his club season for Chatsworth Sporting with 654 runs at 80 (S/R. 120), he was whisked away to America to join MI New York for the inaugural Major League Cricket competition. Courtesy of his dual Passport status, van Staden bagged the local U23 category slot and ended up winning the tournament on July 30.
Roll on the CSA 4-Day Series Division 1 campaign (Nov 2023) and he was top scorer for the Dolphins in both innings (70 & 93) in their drawn match against the Titans. Due to the strength and depth of the Dolphins squad that features the likes of Proteas internationals SJ Erwee, Daryn Dupavillon, Ottneil Baartman, Jason Smith, Khaya Zondo, and Andile Phehlukwayo, van Staden's game time was limited to 2 matches, scoring 210 runs at 52.50.
The South African run machine is now back for the 2024/25 edition, and having played in the season opener v Western Province, has now met the eligibility criteria to play UK club cricket (ie. 5 FC matches within the past 36 months). The talented Dolphins batter, who comes highly recommended by ex-Proteas’ player Benkenstein, has quite the future. Following his season for the Dolphins, he is eager to secure a UK club for the 2025 season.
