Mukesh Kumar is a genuine quick and a key part of India’s pace battery across all three international formats. Despite breaking into the national side relatively late in 2023, he has made a strong impression with his performances. To date, he has played 3 Tests (7 wickets at 25.57), 6 ODIs, and 17 T20Is (20 wickets at 24.35). However, regular opportunities have been limited due to India's strong pace attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj.
Mukesh’s rise to international cricket is a remarkable story. Originally from Bihar, he moved to Bengal in 2014 and was picked up by the Cricket Association of Bengal despite not having played club cricket. Initially a tennis-ball cricketer, he overcame anemia and bone edema in his knees through rigorous training under Ranadeb Bose and Waqar Younis. His transformation into a robust fast bowler saw him become a vital part of Bengal’s pace attack alongside Akash Deep and Ishan Porel.
He made an immediate impact on his first-class debut at 22, dismissing Virender Sehwag as part of a four-wicket haul against Haryana. From the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season, he became a regular for Bengal, taking 22 wickets in five matches, followed by 32 wickets in 2019-20, playing a key role in Bengal’s run to the Ranji Trophy final. His semi-final spell against Karnataka, where he dismissed KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Karun Nair, and Manish Pandey, was particularly memorable.
Mukesh continued to impress in white-ball formats, picking up five wickets on his India A debut against New Zealand A (September 2022) and a six-for during the Bangladesh A tour. His performances earned him an IPL contract with Delhi Capitals in 2023 (₹5.50 crore). He made his international debut across all three formats within just 14 days, the shortest span for any Indian player. By the end of 2023, he had played 18 matches for India.
Opportunities beyond 2023 have been limited, with only a couple of Tests and a final T20I in July 2024. However, his 6-46 against Australia A in November 2024, helping bowl the opposition out for 195, reinforced his credentials for a national recall. Now, Mukesh is eager to explore County Cricket opportunities in 2025, where his ability to move the ball at pace is expected to make him a serious threat in English conditions.
