Ben Jacobs (22) is a flowing, left-handed opening batsman playing for Tring Park Cricket Club 1st XI in the Thames Valley Cricket League Division 1, with experience playing in the Home Counties Premier Cricket League (HCPCL, an ECB Premier League). Building upon a successful 2023 (403 league runs @ 33.58 from 13 innings, 1 hundred, 1 fifty), the 2024 season is proving to be a standout one for Ben. Having scored 492 league runs @ 54.67, from 11 innings, with 3 league games left, Ben leads the league batting average of those with 6 innings or more to their name. Passing fifty 5 times so far this season, Ben's best knock has been 91* from 104 balls in a quick runs chase. This came a week after a 75* in another comprehensive chase. In a season where Tring are pushing for promotion back into the HCPCL, Ben's runs have been of significant importance.
These recent batting exploits are built upon strong cricketing foundations. Two seasons playing in the HCPCL saw Ben gain vast experience while playing some important innings. Namely, a game changing 66 in a successful chase of 208 in the 2021 HCPCL Division 1, against a Buckingham attack that included storied West Indian test spinner Shane Shillingford. Along with three consecutive fifty's in the 2022 HCPCL Division 2, facing multiple current pros in doing so. Prior to this Ben played 1st XI cricket, and was a sport scholar, at St Edward's, Oxford, one of the best cricketing schools in the UK, having produced a number of county pros in recent years. Similarly, Ben played for the national county (formerly minor county) Bucks CCC through the age groups, from U11-17. These years of quality cricket, with exposure to top coaches, have culminated in a strong technical foundation and a very composed temperament, allowing for a well rounded game against both pace and spin.
Alongside his batting prowess Ben is an excellent fielder. With a prolific athletic background and energy in the field, Ben is able to effect the game from anywhere, whether that be in the cordon, the covers, under the lid, or on the boundary. Throwing his body around to take catches or save runs whenever possible. This is evidenced by the 31 1st XI league catches Ben has taken from 2021-2024, the highest number amongst Tring Park CC 1st XI players in this time period.
Having recently completed his degree, Ben is very eager to further develop his game at a high level overseas this winter, building on his vast experience playing ECB Premier League, 1st XI, and representative cricket in England.
