Sanjeewan Priyadarshana is just one of those cricketers that you fancy will do well in UK club cricket given his skill set.
It’s rare to come across a left arm chinaman bowler at the best of times, and this Sri Lankan youngster is really is quite the prospect.
Having excelled at school and under-age group level, Sanjeewan was selected for the Sri Lankan Under-19 pool in 2018. Whilst he didn’t make the cut for the tour to New Zealand, his inclusion into the top 25 U19 cricketers in the country was testament to his undoubted potential.
During the same year (2018), he was rewarded with a SLC Board contract, reaffirming his status as a rising star of Sri Lankan cricket. Both sides of COVID, Sanjeewan was part of the National spin bowling squad, whilst playing both U23 and professional cricket for Kurunegala Youth Cricket Club.
Whilst he has yet to transfer his youthful promise into prolific performance at professional level, it’s still early days for the youngster, who has currently played nearly 40 matches across the three formats.
Throughout his fledgling career, Sanjeewan has been pigeon-holed as a white-ball bowler, playing the majority of his matches in the 50-over format. However, this summer (2024/25) he is hoping to add to his 8 first-class matches to evidence his all-format ability.
Subject to playing 3 more FC matches this summer, the talented Sri Lankan chinaman, who is also a useful batter in the lower-middle order, is looking to play cricket in the UK. He will look to join his many Kurunegala team-mates who ply their trade in the UK each year, including the likes of CricX stars Dinushka Malan, Vinodh Perera, Randeera Ranasinghe, and Sanoj Darshika.
We really do think Sanjeewan’s skill set will bamboozle UK club batters, and he’ll score his fair share of league runs from the middle order to boot. A highly rated option.
