Akshay Chandran is an outstanding batting all-rounder with a remarkable record to boot.
Hailing from Kochi, a city based southwest of India’s coastal state of Kerala. The all-rounder has been a stand-out performer for state for over a decade, following his first-class debut during the 2014/15 season.
During this period, Chandran has played over 50 matches across the three formats, the majority of these in Ranji Trophy (FC) cricket. He has excelled, with nearly 1,500 runs averaging neigh on 40, with 4 hundreds and a highest score of 184. In addition, his slow left-arm spin has accounted for 34 wickets at 22.85 with best figures of 6-39.
Chandran plays for a Kerala side skippered by Sachin Baby, a side that has made history in recent years. Until their record-breaking 2017/18 season, Kerala had not made the Ranji Trophy finals. That season, they made the quarter finals, then went one better in 2018/19, making the semis. Chandran played a key role in both campaigns.
However, post COVID, he has become a key feature in Kerala’s red ball side, batting in the middle order and bowling his left-arm spin. After a strong 2022/23 season hitting his second first-class century (150) he would enjoy a remarkable 2023/24 Ranji campaign scoring 401 runs at 66.83 with two centuries, including his career-best 184 – not to mention a few wickets along the way.
The veteran Indian all-rounder is a serious performer, who also enjoyed a successful maiden UK stint last summer. Playing for Haverigg in the Cumbrian Premier League, he struck 499 runs at 38.38 alongside 18 wickets at 15.78 before an early departure ended his summer.
Now the Kerala star is seeking a return, ideally for a longer stint. No doubt the Indian all-rounder will be a sought-after commodity given his skill set and numbers, home and abroad.
