Swarupam Purkayastha is a gifted Indian batting all-rounder playing for Assam across the three formats.
The right-handed opening batter and off-spinner has been prolific in both first-class (Ranji Trophy), and List A (Vijay Hazare Trophy) cricket in recent seasons.
In 2019/20, he struck 326 runs at 46.57, including a career-best 163 not out from 150 balls against Mizoram, in List A cricket, then followed up with 167 runs at 33.40 (2021/22), and 288 runs at 41.14 (2022/23). In first-class cricket, he struck 202 runs at 50.50 (2021/22) followed by 363 runs at 30.25 during the last summer (2022/23).
Purkayastha has been a consistent performer for Assam since his domestic debut during the 2008/09 season. Over the past decade, he has played over 100 matches, scored over 3,000 runs, and taken nearly 100 wickets. He has 5 centuries and boasts first-class and List A averages of 27.82 and 32.45, respectively with the bat.
Purkayastha is a genuine all-rounder, albeit, perhaps hasn’t featured at the bowling crease as much as he’d like over the past few years. That said, he clearly has genuine all-rounder claims courtesy of his domestic numbers which include an impressive 2014/15 season taking 36 wickets at 17.52 including career-best figures of 8-29.
The talented all-rounder has also enjoyed success abroad, playing two stints in Durham for Castle Eden (2012) and Seaham Harbour (2013).
After an 8-year hiatus, Purkayastha is now eager to return to the UK for the 2024 season.
