Gareth Severin is an explosive wicket-keeper batter currently into his second professional contract with the Wellington Firebirds for the 2024/25 domestic summer.
After years dominating Premier and Provincial A cricket, Severin was finally rewarded with Wellington selection (March 2023) and boy did he impress. He struck 80 in his maiden innings against Auckland, before almost single-handedly chasing down Northern Districts’ 391 in his second match, finishing with a record-breaking 196.
This innings, was truly exceptional. Coming in at 19-2, against an attack featuring the likes of Colin de Grandhomme, and Mitch Santner, Severin took the Firebirds to the brink of victory.
Roll on the 2023/24 season and the Wellingtonian would continue to shine hitting 2 further centuries, namely 143, and 105 against Auckland, and Otago, respectively. He would add 4 further half-centuries along the way, including consecutive fifties against CD, to register 657 runs at 46.92 last summer.
Severin really is quite the prospect who now sits on 951 runs at 47.55 heading into the new season.
Whilst scoring runs aplenty in New Zealand, Severin has done likewise in England over the past three years for Kent League club, Hayes. During his maiden stint (2022), he would help his side to Premier League glory and over his 3 seasons with the club, he would rack up 3093 runs at 40.70 with 21 fifties, and 5 hundreds, including a quite remarkable highest score of 146* (122) when chasing down Minster’s 228 inside 44 overs.
During his tenure with Hayes, Severin would also score runs aplenty for the Kent 2nd XI.
Of South African origin, Severin was educated at Wellington College (NZ), and attended the New Zealand Institute of Sport. He represented the nation’s capital through the age-groups, and was picked for a New Zealand Development team following a chart-topping NZ Under-19 Tournament. He has also excelled for Johnsonville in Wellington’s Premier Competition, and has represented the Wellington A side in several Provincial A Tournaments in recent years.
The future looks incredibly bright for the kiwi run machine who is looking to dominate another domestic season before exploring a UK return in 2025. Holder of an Ancestry Visa, Severin is actively seeking County cricket alongside his club stint next summer.
