Henry Hunt is a prolific opening batter, and a key performer for South Australia in Australian domestic cricket.
A former Australian Under-19 (Jan 2016) representative, Hunt has since become one of Australia’s leading openers, hitting 8 centuries, and 9 fifties amongst 2,680 runs at 32.68 in his 43 Sheffield Shield matches since his first-class debut in October 2019.
Such has been his dominance, with season tallies of 487 runs at 28.64 (2019/20), 628 runs at 44.85 (2020/21), 464 runs at 46.40 (2021/22), 456 runs at 24 (2022/23) he has been touted as a national prospect in recent times.
Hunt, who also made his Big Bash debut for the Adelaide Strikers in Jan 2022, has long been regarded as a player for the future. Originally from the country in New South Wales, Hunt initially shot to prominence courtesy of a chart-topping Futures League tournament for ACT/NSW Country (2018/19). He struck 737 runs at 46.06 including a highest score of 208, culminating with a West End Redbacks rookie contract in the following summer.
At Grade level, he starred for Eastern Suburbs in the Sydney Grade Competition. During his prolific 2018/19 summer, he also equaled Johan Botha’s record for the fastest T20 century, belting 104 from just 45 balls against UNSW. Since relocating to Adelaide, Hunt has been a key performer for Kensington with 2,000 plus runs averaging high 40s when available around his Redbacks commitments.
In Shield cricket, he has impressed with his 8 centuries and broke a 52-year-old record for the highest opening partnership for South Australia in first-class cricket when sharing a 293-run stand with Jake Weatherald.
In December 2021, Hunt was selected to play for Australia A against the touring England Lions, where he would go on to score 33, and 40 from the top of the order. He would then play against Sri Lanka A in June 2022 hitting scores of 28, and 107 in the second of two 4-day matches.
The Redbacks star has also enjoyed success in Darwin (Northern Territory), plus two stints in England with Brighton & Hove (2016), Rochdale (2023), and a strong sub pro stint with Moddershall and Oulton (2023).
A high-quality performer, Hunt was set to return to Northern shores for another season in 2024 but unfortunately sustained a nasty facial injury which jeopadised this deal. He is therefore potentially keen on an option next summer.
