Swarupam Purkayastha

Swarupam Purkayastha is a seasoned Indian batting all-rounder who has been a mainstay for Assam across all formats for over a decade.

A right-handed opening batter and handy off-spinner, Purkayastha has built a solid domestic career, particularly in the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. He enjoyed a breakthrough List A season in 2019/20, racking up 326 runs at an average of 46.57, including a blistering 163* off 150 balls against Mizoram. He followed that up with strong campaigns post-COVID, tallying 167 runs at 33.40 (2021/22) and 288 runs at 41.14 (2022/23).

In the red-ball arena, he’s also made his mark. Notable seasons include 2021/22, where he averaged 50.50, and 2022/23, where he chipped in with 363 runs. While opportunities have been more limited recently, he still managed a top score of 90 in the 2024/25 Ranji season.

Since debuting in 2008/09, Purkayastha has featured in over 130 domestic matches, scoring nearly 3,500 runs and taking more than 100 wickets. He has five centuries to his name and maintains healthy batting averages in both first-class and List A cricket.

With the ball, he’s equally capable. His standout season came in 2014/15, when he claimed 36 wickets at just 17.52, including career-best figures of 8-29. Over the past three seasons, he’s added another 20 wickets to his first-class tally.

Swarupam also brings overseas experience, having played league cricket in England for Castle Eden (2012) and Seaham Harbour (2013). Now, after more than a decade, he’s keen to return to the UK for the 2026 season, bringing with him a wealth of experience and all-round skill.
